Ive been thinking about this for quite a few months and thought I'd see  what you guys thought on viability etc.

A good bundle of you have seen the wonders that Harrie's have created for us for gifts on the SOSN Forum AND for Lula before she was born.

WELL, for  those that either don't know or can't remember, I created the monograms/logo's AND I had a thought that maybe I had a 'knack' OR there was a 'niche' out there for that sort of thing.
SO, I thoughtt about buying one of the machines to create these beautiful embroidery creations.
I don't have the time to do the stationery stuff AND its not practical having bits etc around with Tallula about... I will pick it back up but I need a project right now (or soonish) to give me some of my identity back.
With this new project, I can create the monograms/images "in house" and the machine will be in the rather huge large shed/workshop (the latter part is the plan once it is sorted) which I made sure has heaps of windows, work area AND power points. So, I will put tiime aside to do the latter part of the creation in the 'workshop'!
I thought about advertising on ebay - kinda doing towels, kids satchel bags (do  they still use them now?), t-shirts, blankets, pictures.... - but offering to personalise the image and create a unique monogram.

Now, honestly, I'd like to see what you think of this? Do you think it's viable?

Hmmm personllly I think your jumping on the band wagon of what you know is succesesful for someone else, what is succsesful to someone may not be to you and is it worth buying all the stuff for it to sit to waste not only that you are going to have two very small children to give your attention too so when would you be able to complete the orders with out frazzling yourself?. I'm sorry if its not what you want to hear

I think it's a great idea. Personally I would use the service, I want to get things done for my friends baby and of course Oliver and hopefully one day for my children and even just for me. Thinking of it there is no end to what could be done; socks, t-shirts even undies!!!  Very Happy And not just stop at monograms, there could be patterns and pictures etc - like the flowers on Lulas curtains.

But as MrsP2b said are you sure you want to go ahead and buy everything just in case it's not for you, time wise?

Of course if you do go for you will have my total support! x

All comments welcome MrsP2b!
I am KINDA jumping on the bandwagon BUT with a difference as I uniquely design the monograms etc. Thats why the idea came to mind.
I know you haven't had much experience (as I haven't done it that much whilst you've been a member on here) of projects I have done in the past so this may seem very "out of the blue" to yourself.
I've seen one of the machines at a semi decent price on ebay (very much doubt I'd be buying new!) and the way I saw it was, I will always want to do personalised things for Tallula (as I have done already but paid someone else to do it) AND the new baby, pretty much right through until they're teenagers.... Christmas gifts for friends etc will be utilised in this way (I generally do things similar to this but pay someone else to do it).
The machine (obviously without threads) new is £685 (no P&P).
Based on this.... for each towel/logo I got embroidered for Tallula it cost me approx £5 (which is a good price, I know). Up to now, she has had (off the top of my head....) 8 towels, 1 dressing gown embroidered = 9 items. I'd like to have more but have held back. That has equated to £45 in embroidery. I'd like to do the same for new baby at least = another £45.
If I did this for each new baby appearing in my life (not my own), that would equate to... (just counting) 11 babies due = £490
So in total for 1 year = £580 worth of embroidery.

That's just on the babies....

So, even if I don't sell things on, maybe I've just justified it to myself that buying the machine etc would be beneficial anyway and selling anything further would be a bonus!

My point in posting was to see from all of your own experience (and this is not detracting from Harries work thst they do for us for the SOSN gifts as that WILL remain) whether you think it was viable in respect of "would people be interested in buying something unique like this"?

ooops forget to respond to the "when would you have the time with 2 children" bit.... The designing for me doesn't take long. I have the lappy (I have a v dinky netbook so I can carry it about easily) of which I'd create the designs.... and the workshop (aka shed) is like a big room of which the equipment would be in. It's not necessarily very time consuming in comparison to other projects I have done

This is why I was going to get a machine 2nd hand.... at least then if I only use it every so often it would be beneficial for me and others too.
There's a machine 2nd hand which is £415 at present and only 6 months old... I'm hoping this goes up to £500 max HOWEVER the £685 one with free P&P and 2 yr warranty is shouting more at me. This IS a long term investment though...
I feel VERY lost identity wise at present as I am doing nothing for me. I'm just very much "a mother"!

I'm a bit late here seeing as you have it already but providing your pricing is competitive I'm sure this will work. People love personalised stuff - you could do New Born Packages (like the one I want really)

2 bibs
2 grows
2 flannels

Obviously in blue or pink colours. For those that want to buy before the baby's born "Baby Surname" or maybe the parents have had a "bump" nickname like "Bean".

Back to School Packages:
You could do book bags and gym bags for primary school kids whose parents don't want them to get lost! http://www.lincsprint.com/schools_and_clubs/reading_bag_red.jpg.
Pencil cases too.
Maybe name badge things for their clothes too. The ones you sew in so they don't lose their stuff.

Then there's all the wedding and anniversary gifts.

Erm, can't think of anything else.

Certainly, you could go down a mass production route and sell into local baby clothes stores etc. Certainly get yourself some business cards done - people like me (budding photog!) can leave cards with families who they work with.

Clothes for dolls and the contraversial reborn dolls.

Now I'm really out of stream.
